A year after François Kevorkian’s brilliant set at SonarLab, “François K. Live At Sónar” is finally out. A one hundred percent testimony of one of the star moments of Sónar 2002.
“François K. Live At Sónar” may seem like another session album but, even though if this the case, it marks a turning point in François Kevorkian’s career, as well as being his first live recording on CD.
On June 14 2002, François K. marked a before and an after in his career as a DJ on the SonarLab stage of Sónar at the Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona (CCCB). A dance music cult figure who has been systematically identified with house –the influence of Larry Levan and Franckie Knuckles had always pursued him-, at this point in his extensive career Kevorkian decided that a change was called for.
The stage for this settling of accounts was Sónar 2002. And Kevorkian got that weight off his mind. In doing so he not only satisfied his diehard fans but also others who were there and (until then) were not avid followers.
François K’s own comments below, where he vividly recalls this magic and crucial event, speak for themselves.
François K Dixit:
Barcelona, June 14th, 2002: The occasion, the setting, and the hour couldn’t have been more perfect.
Flying in from another gig in rainy Sweden on 3 hours of sleep, and arriving on the same afternoon already felt like a dream sequence unfolding. Immediately sensing warmth, friendliness, and a cosmopolitan city bustling with much creative vitality.
Onto the open-air stage on the courtyard of the CCCB (Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona), where under a tent many people are gathered in anticipation. A quick sound check and already, it feels like the music is almost trying to shake itself free and out of my record boxes. It wants to get out through the speakers and melt in with the crowd!!
This particular occasion was a real turning point in my musical path. I had made the decision a short few weeks earlier that I would play a full-on electronic and futuristic set, from techno to dub with anything in between, with little to do with what certain people who had heard me before might expect my DJ sets to be. Pulling all the stops, making no compromises or concessions. A Moment Of Truth, if I may call it that. So back in New York, I prepared some of the music which I felt was going to take us there, but did not practice mixing or try thinking of any structures beforehand; this had to be a totally fresh and spontaneous discovery. I was actually going to play and mix a good number of those records together for the first time ever in front of an audience, in a totally free and improvised manner, and it had to come directly from the inner soul.
What followed has become one of my fondest musical memories, pure bliss and total rapture with a passionate audience who gave me more loving energy and good vibes than I thought was possible. We experienced and felt so much together in those two hours, which actually seemed like little more than a short few minutes! I sincerely hope that some of that love and excitement translates onto this disc, which is my first-ever-live CD. And for those who were there, a way to remember this magical moment we shared together on an early evening of June 2002…when we got ‘Lost In Music’ together!
“François K. Live At Sónar” is the first Dj session to be specifically conceived and recorded for Sónar. An unprecedented event which transcended pop-rock festival circles. It is also the sixth release on SonarMusic, the record division of Advanced Music-Sónar.
