The third release of the Wax Sessions series, started by Angel Molina in 2000, has now been out in Spain and soon will see the light abroad.
Three years after Volume II, Molina gives his musical discourse another turn. In this record Molina turns radical, delivering an overwhelming piece of work in which he shows that techno is not only in excellent health but continues to be a surprising territory to explore.
This is Angel Molina’s premise as well as the conclusion one draws after experimenting Wax Sessions III.
A brutal selection of 18 themes, most of them by unknown authors, mixed, looped, edited and manipulated to form 26 tracks. A model repertoire of the most profound and obscure tech-funk.
Creating a sound both cold and sexy, Molina moves away from industrialism without forgetting its essence. He accepts the rules of minimalism and proposes a journey through territories in which he composes himself like nobody else.
Wax Sessions III is without a doubt his greatest work. And this is not due simply to the fact that Molina is a veteran of 15 years in the profession, but rather because in this field the essence of Angel Molina’s talent shines forth in an almost overwhelming fashion: the capacity to built a fascinating discourse with material not easy to use and in many circumstances extreme.
At a time when many Dj’s are trying to revitalize their profession by leaning on eclecticism – often a synonym for insignificance – Molina opts for super-specialization.
Yet as we know, Molina is not like the others.
Acclaimed for more than a decade as the best Spanish DJ, he’s never used his status to justify being carried off by established rhetoric or comfortable positions. In other words, he’s one of the few artists not to be remembered for “putting his foot in his mouth”.
With his status as an essential artist in Spanish electronics, despite having produced little music of his own, Angel Molina’s position is unique, and truly unimaginable for a Dj in this country a couple of years ago. How many Spanish Dj’s can you name who are respected by the entire electronic family as well as by the authorities of the pop and rock circles?
Molina’s professional activity, which covers a full seven days of the week, compels him to be in constant touch with an enormous amount of vinyl that he meticulously selects, dissects and catalogues for his sets at clubs and festivals, his record and Sci-fi shop, and web-based distribution company dealing with dance products.
He always complains about how little time he has, and it’s taken him almost three years to deliver this new album. To those who know him there’s no doubt this is the music’s fault, or rather the fault of Molina’s excessive musical passion.
Obsessive like few others, Molina wants each and every one of his tracks to have a function. He’s extremely fussy in the indispensable preparation for each one of his sets, regardless of its kind or nature.
Molina is well known for his theme based sets, which he structures in very disparate focal points: from industrialism to techno-pop (not necessarily from the 80’s) to minimalism dub de basic channel/chain reaction/burial (the memorable session at Barcelona’s Electric Café is still circulating over the Internet) or untainted electronics by Argentinean label Fragil, compiled in “Pasada Profesional”, an extraordinary cd mix recorded in 2003 with the elite of Argentinean electronics. Copies can still be found in some stores.
Wax Sessions III is a record that requires time. It forces you to carefully choose the moment to listen to it and, as inevitably happens with works of this kind, is enjoyed most when close attention is paid to it.
This is not an easy piece, because it was never meant to be easy. The particular calling and devotion of the artist made this inevitable both in terms of the record’s creation and resolution. Angel wouldn’t have it any other way. Quite simply, this man doesn’t like things to be easy.
