SonarEvents | SonarClub Presents :: François K   The well known French disc jockey and producer, who is about to release “François K. Live at Sónar” (SonarMusic, 03), will be back to show his dexterity at the decks in the booths at the Cool and Cibeles clubs this coming June 2 and 3 , respectively. There are many who insist on linking the burgeoning French scene with a phenomenon called French groove, which seemed to have pervaded the winds coming from electronica made on the other side of the Pyrenees. François Kevorkian had nothing to do with all that. Actually, he has a lot more to do with the very definition of dance music. Born in Rodez, France in 1954, Kevorkian is one of the few living legends of electronic music who is still on the rosters. In 1975 he moved to New York; where he soon came into contacts with local clubs and was immediately captivated by the discotheques of the Big Apple. Before long he was working as a lights technician, Substitute Dj and man of all trades in clubs such as Studio 54 or the one and only Paradise Garage. That’s how he got to know two young aspiring DJs, Larry Levan and Frankie Knuckles who later on became the precursors of house. He later on excelled as a producer and remixer, demonstrating a firm hand on such celebrated remixes as “Tour de France”, by his friends Kraftwerk. In 1990, he took on the production of “Violator”, by Depeche Mode, and thus consecrated himself in the dance music universe as only true cracks do: through the main gates. Kevorkian patented a form of production which borrowed elements from disco music and electro pop, together with spacey sounds and relentless rhythms. Currently, Kevorkian continues to defend the electronic music universe as an open field for risk taking and experimentation.
