| Sónar 2004 | Women have power |

Mala Rodríguez is the latest addition to Sónar 2004. The Sevillian singer will be performing on Friday 18 June during the SonarFórum night and will round off the most feminine roster ever in the history of the festival.
In other genres such as rock, pop and r&b, women such as Courtney Love, Madonna and Kelis have imposed their law for some time. Now the time has come round for electronica and hip hop to follow suit. A quick glance at the Sónar 2004 is enough to prove it. From Dani Siciliano to La Mala Rodríguez, and including Magda, Juana Molina, Maja Ratkje and Client Dj’s, every style – be it techno, pop, hip hop or electronic folk – has an unmistakable female colour.
See for yourself what each of them has to offer and find out why their presence is intimidating more and more the big timers in the medium: the men. Here's a guide that will convince even the staunchest disbelievers:
The ladies of experimentation
Esmuc Concert: Barbara Held + David Berhman:: Thursday 17 June, 05.00 pm SonarHall David Berhman, an internationally renowned contemporary composer since the sixties joins up with one of his regular collaborators, the equally veteran Barbara Held, to offer a performance based on the use of interactive software. Classic experimentation with a School of Music warrantee.
Henriette Sennenvendt:: Thursday 17 June, 06.45 pm SonarDome Her delicate voice bestows warmth to the music of Sofus Forsberg and above all makes it accessible. The perfect counterpoint to the controlled buzzes and tenuous melodies of "NO/1", a record of clicks and cuts with a dense assortment of tricks, sounds and resources that have placed these two unknown artists at the top of the heap of less orthodox electronica.
Maja Ratkje:: Friday 18 June, 05.00 pm SonarComplex The solo debut of this component of Spunk has shown that Maja Ratkje is more than a pretty and personal voice. "Voice” not only reveals her musical instinct by means of disquieting, fragile and mysterious bases (which she shares with Jazzkammer), but also puts her elastic vocal chords to the test. Maja passes the test with flying colours and at the same time lays out a whole new palette of rich, unusual and disquieting sounds, warbles and articulated noises from a laptop.
The folksiest
Juana Molina:: Saturday 19 June, 06.20 pm SonarVillage “Segundo” is the American debut of the Argentinean comedian, Juana Molina, an album that reveals her unknown facet as a singer songwriter. Her highly personal and elastic voice is transformed into an instrument that fuses magically with electronic and acoustic arrangements (guitars, synthesizers. base and even a bit of drums). The outcome is an inhospitable and unsuspected discourse, which is at once tremendously accessible yet difficult to see. A true sound experience.
Provocation
V8:: Thursday 17 June, 06.40 pm SonarVillage A specialist in language and the use of the word to voice demands, Valerie Almeida tops the deep bass lines of Manuvers with slogans, demands and shouts in support for the struggle for autonomy in Latin America. The protest song of the 21st century.
La Mala Rodríguez:: Friday 18 June, 03.00 am SonarPark La Mala is back with “Alevosía” which brings to the fore all the talent of her art, her untameable personality and all the charisma of a hip hop artist who grabbing force transcends all genres, wins over all audiences and seduces all those who, just by hearing her, pick up on the powerful influx of her tremendous music.
All That Jazz
Susanna & The Magical Orchestra Friday 18 June, 09.00 pm SonarComplex The union between the vocal chords of Susanna Karolina Wallumrød and the magic orchestra Morten Qvenild (ex-Jaga Jazzist) has produced "List of Lights and Buoys": a sweet mix of ambient pop and sensual electronic groove that has once again turned the spotlight on the Norway scene, a never-ending source of inspiration for state of the art jazz. In an undefined place between Fennesz and Tom Waits. A more than promising debut...
Dani Siciliano:: Saturday 19 June, 04.00 pm SonarVillage Known to many as the singer of Matthew Herbert and we know what she’s up to thanks to Matmos, but Dani Siciliano doesn’t need any more helping hands to stand up in her own right. This well known DJ on the prolific San Francisco scene has now become a producer, thanks to her solo debut under the umbrella of ¡K7. “Likes…” adds smooth, naughty and intelligent bass lines to her personal vocal chords, which can all of a sudden discover Nirvana, emulate Timbaland or submerge us into a sea of absolutely enrapturing melodies.
Mara Carlyle:: Saturady 19 June, 07.30 pm SonarHall Mara’s highly personal voice was one of the pleasant surprises on two absolutely essential works such as “Spokes” by Plaid and on Matthew Herbert’s “Good Morning Sunshine”. Thanks to Accidental, she has now become her own leading lady and her solo debut is scheduled for this coming summer. Lights, camera, action!
The vilest ones
Girlswholikeporno:: Thursday 17 of June, 08.30 pm Sonarama Their name a clear statement in itself, this collective from Murcia stands out with an attitude somewhere between punk and riot girls. Activism, feminism, irony and digital creation, they offer an acidic ode to women and sex, conceived by women with no inhibitions
VJ Ubergeek Thrusday 17 of June, 09.15 pm Sonarama "CyberSpaceLand" turns search engine queries into fun-and-funky club visuals while revealing the poignant poetry of net culture. And it turns tedious typing into a kinetic psychedelic performance! Music by DJ Donna Maya.
Doily:: Friday 18 June, 09.15 pm SonarDome Heather Leitner started out on the music scene sharing the stage with danceable experimentation personalities such as Hrvatski, I-Sound, DJ Scud, Noizecreator and, of course, Criterion, the man she decided to lay the first stone of Broklyn Records with half a decade ago. Probably because of this, her proposal, an array of lo-fi breaks and splurges of electronic fury, soon made its impact on the international scene with titles such as “Matress of the Universe”.
Magda:: Friday 18 june, 10.30 pm SonarClub Weaned by and during the second wave of Detroit producers, this experienced DJ (who will soon be making the leap to production under the name Run/Stop Restore) is one of the new milestones of American minimalism. The great female hope of the Motor City fostered by Richie Hawtin.
Client Dj's:: Saturday 19 June, 03.40 pm SonarDome Client A and Client B are two imposing ladies who are devoted to the noble cause of electro-punk cut out for the dancefloor. The meeting point between Kraftwerk (self confessed fans of the duo), Joy Division, The Smiths and pop culture.
