Alexander's Annexe

Tristano

Murcof

Sónar 2007 | L’Auditori hosts a double session of piano and electronica on the second day of Sónar 2007.

Two concerts by the trio Alexander’s Annexe feat. Mira Calix and the duo consisting of Tristano Murcof explore the relationship between classical forms and electronic sounds once again this year.

L’Auditori in Barcelona will be the stage of one of the most special and exclusive moments at Sónar 2007. As part of the programming on Friday the 15th of June, there will be an experiment which will place electronic sound in contact with classical methodologies and which will bring together musicians from these two traditionally far removed areas once again, in the setting of two unprecedented concerts. Like last year's concert by Ryuichi Sakamoto and Alva Noto, the piano will be the main feature of this year's joint project between Sónar and L’Auditori. On this occasion, the classical instrument par excellence willl be submitted to various processes of transformation by the trio Alexander’s Annexe feat. Mira Calix and the duo formed by Tristano and Murcof.

The complex and organic electronica of the project Alexander’s Annexe feat. Mira Calix is the result of a collaboration between Chantal Pasamonte (better known as Mira Calix, the alias she uses for her projects on the WARP label), Sarah Nicolls and David Sheppard. All three, who frequently work with the famous London Sinfonietta, will explore the sonorities of the piano beyond its acoustic properties. Within the context of digital manipulation and improvised dialogue, the trio's approach lies between the more heterodox piano forms and digital electronic abstraction. Their live show, the Spanish première, promises to be an unprecedented experiment which will involve all types of sonic tricks.

The collaboration between the pianist Francesco Tristano Schlimé and Fernando Corona (aka Murcof) involves an encounter between two artists who have a lot in common despite coming from different musical backgrounds. Tristano is a classically trained musician, who at 25 years old has become one of the most well-known members of his generation. This piano virtuoso, one of the youngest musicians to record Bach's "Goldberg Variations" and other equally complex scores (Frescobaldi, Prokovief and Berio are just some of the composers included in his repertoire), is also a devotee of electronic music. In his most recent work, entitled "Not For Piano", he has included piano versions of electronic classics like “The Bells” by Jeff Mills and "Strings of Life" by Derrick May. Murcof (the producer of Tristano's album) is an electronic musician who has always included the sound of the piano in his compositions of dense, emotional electronica. The duo's stage debut is still a mystery, for which we can only anticipate great results.

N.B.: Neither the general pass nor accreditation give access to the concerts on Thursday 14 in SonarPark at Fira Gran Via (M2), or the concert on Friday the 15th at L'Auditori de Barcelona.
