| Sónar 2008 | SonarMàtica :: Future Past Cinema - The Future of the Cinema of the Past |
 |
| |
SonarMàtica, the festival's main exhibition area, presents Future Past Cinema this year, an unusual exhibition that connects the past and future of the cinema from a single perspective.
Future Past Cinema is an exhibition that transports the visitor to the fascinating universe of the moving image of the 19th century, as seen through the eyes of artists working with contemporary new media.
Ten interactive installations recover the strange optical devices that historically preceded the Lumière brothers' film projector for the visitor.
Magic lanterns, zoetropes, panoramas and chronophotography were the first attempts to offer the viewer a moving image before the 20th century.
The magic lantern was used as a lamp to illuminate an image, the zoetrope animated a static image by making it turn, the panorama provided circular 360-degree images and chronophotography was the forerunner of the popular flipbook. This is a wealth of surprising inventiveness that Sónar plans to bring up to date by means of the interactive approaches of contemporary artists.
As a result, Marnix De Nijs offers the visitor the 360º view of an image, sitting on a gyratory structure. Takashi Kawashima rediscovers the world of shadow puppetry, combining it with the possibilities of computer technology. Andy Cameron records our image and returns it to us reconstructed sequentially on a videowall. And Juan Ospina invites us to make our own digital flipbook.
The exhibition offers the visitor an original experience. On one hand, there are ten 19th century machines that were used for creating moving images, part of the Tomás Mallol collection from the Museu de Cinema de Girona, and on the other hand, the interactive installation that is inspired by each of these historical pieces and brings them up to date in the 21st century.
Future Past Cinema opens the box of dreams which film has been and always will be.
Future Past Cinema is part of the El Cine Más Allá Del Cine [Cinema Beyond Cinema] programme at Sónar 2008 and is the second exhibition in the SonarMàtica 19th trilogy.
A project curated by Jose Luis de Vicente, Oscar Abril Ascaso and Advanced Music. With the co-operation of Medialab-Prado, Museu de Cinema de Girona and Fabrica.
Medialab-Prado is a Madrid City Council international reference space for production, research and dissemination of digital culture and the area where art, science, technology and society converge. “Interactivos?08: Vision Play” will be held in Medialab-Prado (Madrid) from 30 May to 14 June 2008.
