In early 2025, composer, vocalist and producer Julianna Barwick travelled to Paris with classically trained harpist and composer Mary Lattimore for a series of recording sessions organised by the Philharmonie de Paris and French label Infiné. Over nine days, the pair laid down what would become Tragic Magic, using historical harps and analog synthesisers from the Philharmonie’s instrument collection. Both had flown into Paris from Los Angeles in the immediate aftermath of the January 2025 wildfires, and the album reflects the solace they found in both their music and each other’s company in the wake of tragedy.
Both artists were left awestruck by the Philharmonie’s collection, and their sense of reverie is palpable throughout the album - it’s not every day you get to play an 18th century harp or an original PROPHET-5 synthesiser - as well as something that’s harder to put into words. Cosmic wonder mixes with a sense of wearied calm, fleetingly beautiful and tinted with sadness. Witness the pair explore their musical telepathy live on stage, for a show that promises to be… magical.
