Part of a new wave of French artists with a refreshingly unbothered attitude to genres and scenes, RONI mixes up everything from jungle and rapid latin rhythms to breakbeat hardcore and mutant techno.
Growing up in Paris clubs - her mother was a ‘true partier’ who took her out with her from the age of 12 - the French-Malaysian DJ and producer has a deep understanding of how to work a dancefloor, coupled with voracious appetite for new club music (she’s one of Rinse France’s longest-running residents). Now running her own label, Nehza, she taps into distinct currents running through the French club landscape, from rugged low-end through to open-air psychedelia and rhythmic experiments.
Versatility can often be a backhanded compliment for a DJ, but RONI’s sound is both hard to pin down and instantly recognisable. No surprise that she’s starting to make waves outside of ‘L’Hexagone’: catch her at Sónar next June before she pops up everywhere else.
