Toy Tonics has established a reputation as one of Berlin’s most colourful and euphoric parties. Kapote and Sam Ruffillo, two of the event’s founders, define it as a place for “ optimistic, high-quality music”, a diverse affair which takes in “every layer of disco and house”, and which will take the Sónar audience on a journey full of “positive energy”.
Their first large format ‘jam’ in Spain will take place at Sónar 2024 next June, but for now, SonarMix 031 offers a taste of some of the freshest sounds from their label of the same name. Their mix, recorded a few weeks ago in a studio in the heart of the German capital, features 58 minutes of music released on Toy Tonics, revealing the label’s “the label’s original, different and varied vision of modern electronic music”.
It’s easy to get into the mood when the piano kicks in on Moon Runner’s ‘Interactive Track’. It’s followed by a pair of remixes by Sam Ruffillo: ‘Rum ‘n’ Kola’ by Baby’s Berserk and ‘Cash’ by Cody Currie, the latter produced in collaboration with Kapote. Along the way, there’s room for tracks by Gee Lane, Barbara Boeing, and Italian indie-dance icon Musumeci (you might recognise Ruffillo’s version of his track ‘Danza Organica’, which lit up dancefloors back in summer 2021). All of this leads up to the highlight of the mix, according to its authors: the late DJ Sneak’s ‘Ass Is Gonna Work’, a previously unreleased track out soon on Toy Tonics.
“We can’t wait to bring our iconic back to back to Sónar,” the pair tell us. “We have different influences and tastes that converge in an euphoric musical melting pot that always creates a sense of togetherness, friendship and love on the dance floor”. Feelings that will take over the dancefloor at Sónar 2024.
