A transmission from the cutting-edge of techno on SonarMix 044, courtesy of Mor Elian. Through her mixes, productions, and especially her label Fever AM (run together with Rhyw), the Berlin-based artist has spent the better part of a decade twisting classic forms into new shapes.

Opening and closing with bass-techno hybrids from Bristol producers Jurango and Ploy, SonarMix 044 was recorded after a four-month hiatus from touring. No surprise that it sounds “full of fresh energy”: sweaty drum workouts from TraTraTrax founder Verraco and Maurice Fulton’s ‘jam band’ Syclops find common ground with classic, hypnotic hardgroove from Cari Lekebusch and Steve Bicknell (as S.B. Project); Brooklyn’s MoMA Ready and London’s Drumskull update acid house and UK hardcore for the 21st century. 

If there’s a message, it’s that techno hasn’t run out of ideas - nor forgotten how to have fun - in 2024. Yet despite the rhythmic shifts and percussive left-turns, it also stays true to the original blueprint: a seamlessly mixed, technically perfect soundtrack for late-night dancers and early-morning ravers. 

Expect more of the same at Sónar by Night on Saturday 15th June when Mor Elian goes back-to-back with Marie Montexier. A meeting of two of Berlin’s most forward-thinking selectors that you don’t want to miss.
