A new full-band show from one of Catalonia’s most musical and dependable producers

Gabriel Berlanga’s music as Undo is inseparable from the place where he’s made most of it. The warm, slow grooves and meandering melodies he writes bring to mind a balmy summer night on the Costa Brava, the coastline north of Barcelona where he’s lived since 2011.

Sometime between the tail end of the 90s and the end of the 2000s, Berlanga found himself caught up in a new wave of electronic music that swept through Barcelona and the rest of Europe. Elegant and emotional, it pulled from various places: the slow-motion grooves of Balearic beat, the melodic sensibility of new wave and synth pop, and the repetitive refrains of minimal techno and microhouse. With his own Factor City label, Berlanga has helped keep the flame alive for artists who aren’t exactly bands, but not quite producers either, releasing some of the most musical dance music around.

His own output has remained steady even as fashions have changed, and now he’s preparing a brand new full band live set, in support of his forthcoming album, Jianwei Xun, which will be his fourth full-length release. Created with musical input from Barcelona creative studio Playmodes, the debut show will be at Sónar, a festival which has hosted him many times in the past two decades.
